Large AI Scribe Study Finds Modest Time Savings, Inconsistent Use

A recent large-scale study involving 1,800 clinicians across five academic medical centers has revealed that the use of AI scribes can yield modest time savings in clinical documentation. Conducted from 2023 to 2025, the study found that clinicians utilizing these AI tools saved an average of 16 minutes on documentation and spent 13 minutes less in the medical record for every eight hours of patient care. However, the research did not indicate significant reductions in time spent in electronic health records outside of regular working hours, suggesting that the benefits may vary by clinician type, with primary care and female clinicians experiencing more pronounced advantages.

The findings provide substantial real-world evidence that corroborates earlier, smaller studies on AI scribe efficacy. A previous review indicated that scribes typically saved clinicians less than a minute per clinical note. Despite the modest time savings, other studies have highlighted that AI scribes can lead to significant improvements in clinician burnout and overall well-being, emphasizing the need for effective implementation and guidance in their use.
