The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided not to pursue further enforcement action against Whoop, a wearable technology company, regarding its Blood Pressure Insights feature. This decision comes after the agency initially warned Whoop in July 2025 for releasing the feature without the necessary clearance, asserting that it constituted a medical device requiring regulatory review.
The FDA’s concerns were based on the feature’s potential to provide measurements associated with the diagnosis of hypertension and hypotension. In response, Whoop maintained that the feature was designed for wellness purposes rather than for diagnosing or treating any medical conditions. CEO Will Ahmed emphasized the company’s stance against regulatory overreach, advocating for consumer access to personal health data.
This development underscores the ongoing tension between innovative health technology companies and regulatory agencies, highlighting the need for clear guidelines in the rapidly evolving landscape of digital health solutions.
