Lonza plans to significantly expand its U.S. contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) footprint by acquiring five sites from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. This acquisition will increase Lonza’s U.S. CDMO sites from four to nine and add approximately 1,100 employees, boosting its workforce by nearly 25%. The deal aims to enhance Lonza’s end-to-end development and manufacturing capabilities, particularly in high-demand areas such as antibody-drug conjugates, viral vectors for cell and gene therapies, and advanced drug-delivery technologies.
The acquisition aligns with Lonza’s strategy to strengthen its U.S. presence and improve the resilience of its global manufacturing network. The sites are expected to generate approximately CHF 250 million in sales, with a focus on leveraging existing capacities and expanding to meet market demand. This move could position Lonza for significant growth in the bioconjugates and viral vector sectors, supporting customers from innovation to commercial supply.
