In China, the landscape for clinical trials has shifted significantly due to new government regulations. Juan Huang, whose daughter Huangxi suffers from a rare genetic disease, has experienced firsthand the evolution of clinical research in the country. After years of limited options, Chinese hospitals have developed into advanced centers for diagnosing and treating rare diseases. Huang’s Hope for Rare Foundation was set to initiate two new trials for genetic treatments, leveraging a regulatory pathway that allowed for faster and cheaper testing. However, recent deaths and media scrutiny have led to stricter government oversight, complicating the process for investigator-initiated trials (IIT) that previously enabled quicker access to clinical testing. This tightening of regulations may impact the speed at which new therapies can be developed and tested in China, potentially affecting both local and international stakeholders in the pharmaceutical sector.
