Novartis Pelacarsen Fails to Lower Cardiovascular Events in Trial

Research on cardiovascular health and treatments

Novartis’ experimental drug pelacarsen dramatically lowered lipoprotein(a) levels in a Phase 3 trial but failed to reduce serious cardiovascular outcomes. The HORIZON trial, which followed participants for nearly five years, showed no significant difference in heart attacks, strokes, urgent coronary revascularization, or deaths between those taking the drug and those on a placebo.

This outcome raises questions about Novartis’ cardiovascular strategy, particularly in the growing field of therapies targeting Lp(a), a genetic risk factor for cardiovascular disease present in 1 in 5 people. The study’s findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s scientific sessions and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
