The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has appointed Marco Greco of the European Patients Forum and Dr. Piotr Szymanski as the new co-chairs for its Patients and Consumers Working Party (PCWP) and Healthcare Professionals’ Working Party (HCPWP), respectively. Greco, a lawyer with extensive advocacy experience, has been a longstanding member of the PCWP, having served two terms in various capacities, including on the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee. His election underscores the importance of integrating patient perspectives into EMA’s operations.
Dr. Szymanski brings over 30 years of expertise as a senior cardiologist and policy advisor, with a focus on clinical, academic, regulatory, and digital health domains. His appointment reflects EMA’s commitment to fostering early and sustained engagement with healthcare professionals and patient organizations throughout the drug development process, including clinical trials and pharmacovigilance.
The PCWP and HCPWP serve as vital platforms for stakeholders, ensuring that the voices of patients, consumers, and healthcare professionals are represented in EMA’s decision-making processes. This leadership transition is expected to enhance collaborative efforts in addressing the evolving landscape of healthcare regulation and patient care.
