Lonza has announced plans to expand its US-based capacity for spray-dried dispersions by constructing two new PSD-4 units at its Bend, Oregon facility. This move comes as drug developers increasingly encounter formulation and bioavailability challenges associated with poorly soluble compounds.
The demand for contract development and manufacturing services in this area has surged, necessitating enhanced commercial-scale capabilities. The new facility will not only complement Lonza’s existing development services but also enable support across both clinical and commercial manufacturing stages.
Christian Seufert, head of Advanced Synthesis at Lonza, emphasized the importance of advanced particle engineering technologies in addressing the complexities of modern drug molecules. The investment aims to bolster the Bend team’s capacity to assist customers as their programs advance toward commercialization.
Furthermore, the facility will be designed for future capacity expansions and will incorporate energy-efficient systems and upgraded emissions-control technologies. This strategic initiative aligns with Lonza’s broader goal of enhancing its US manufacturing footprint, providing pharmaceutical companies with closer access to production capabilities and reducing dependency on concentrated supply networks.
CEO Wolfgang Wienand noted that the US remains a vital hub for pharmaceutical innovation. By expanding its spray-drying capabilities, Lonza seeks to improve the delivery and bioavailability of medicines, thereby reinforcing its position in the contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) sector.
The expanded Bend operation will facilitate an integrated pathway from development to commercial production, covering not only small molecules but also a range of modalities, including biologics and mRNA.
