Alamar Biosciences and Nightingale Health have announced the UK Biobank Proteomics for Risk Identification and Signatures of brain health in Midlife (UKB-PRISM) study, which aims to test an ultrasensitive platform for detecting scarce blood proteins that may indicate neurodegeneration. The study will analyze 80,000 blood samples, potentially identifying biomarkers years before symptoms manifest. Nightingale will conduct the measurements using Alamar’s NULISA platform, which utilizes DNA oligonucleotides to capture target proteins. The study is funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Alzheimer’s Research UK, and LifeArc, with completion expected by the end of 2027.
This initiative reflects an increasing recognition that the biological processes underlying Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases may begin years prior to clinical diagnosis. The findings could provide valuable insights into potential biomarkers and therapeutic avenues, enhancing understanding of brain health and aiding in the diagnosis of rare dementias.
