Cytiva Completes Doubling of Utah Site’s Liquid Media Production Capacity

Cytiva has finalized an expansion of its Logan, UT, facility, effectively doubling its liquid media production capacity. This strategic move is aimed at enhancing supply chain continuity for customers relying on Cytiva for essential cell culture solutions.

The expansion, which includes the new animal-derived component-free (ADCF) liquid media facility (A1X), was confirmed by Pierre-Alain Ruffieux, Cytiva’s group executive for bioprocess, during a recent interview at the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) International Convention in San Diego. The completion was marked with a ceremony at the site, underscoring the significance of this upgrade.

The A1X facility boasts larger mixing tanks, accommodating batch sizes from 700 L to 13,000 L, a notable increase from the previous range of 100 L to 10,000 L. Additionally, the facility features advanced materials such as AL6XN stainless steel, enhancing resistance to wear and corrosion, thereby improving product integrity.

With the addition of three manifold fill lines, six mixing tanks, and a utility building equipped with large capacity tanks and systems, the expanded site is poised to meet the growing demands of large-volume liquid media production. Cytiva has also optimized the manufacturing floor layout to enhance safety and reduce production cycle times, reflecting a commitment to continuous improvement.

This expansion follows previous enhancements to Cytiva’s manufacturing capabilities, including increased capacity for dry powder and liquid media, as well as a new quality control lab. Such investments are crucial as the biopharma sector faces increasing pressure to innovate and expedite drug development processes.
