Federal grant delays threaten critical disability research and services

The countdown has started. Robert Gould has 73 days before federal funding delays jeopardize decades of his institution’s work aimed at enhancing knowledge and understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“It’s sickening,” said Gould, a professor in the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois Chicago and the director of research for the Great Lakes ADA Center. “So many people rely on and use our services. … It’s not a partisan issue, so it doesn’t make sense to me that these delays keep on happening.” The implications of such funding disruptions extend beyond academic research; they threaten the very fabric of support systems for individuals with disabilities, potentially undermining advancements in accessibility and inclusion. As the deadline looms, stakeholders in the disability services sector are left to grapple with the uncertainty of their future operations and the impact on those they serve.
