Fresenius is expanding its biosimilars strategy through an exclusive development agreement with WuXi Biologics that could add as many as 37 candidates to its portfolio over the next decade. The agreement provides Fresenius with access to a broader range of biologic drug development programs while allowing the company to retain control over candidate selection, manufacturing decisions, and global commercialization.
The collaboration represents the largest development agreement announced in the biosimilars industry to date. It could increase Fresenius’ marketed and pipeline portfolio from 29 molecules to as many as 66, targeting originator products with combined sales exceeding $410 billion, based on list prices. The expanded portfolio is expected to cover 13 therapeutic areas, including new opportunities in neurology, nephrology, and cardiopulmonary medicine.
Fresenius CEO Michael Sen stated that the agreement will provide access to development capabilities needed to compete in a market where manufacturing scale and development speed are increasingly important. The partnership allows Fresenius to evaluate opportunities before committing resources to full development programs, potentially increasing Biopharma research and development expenses during the development phase.
