CDMO Hovione has opened a new 31,000-square-foot facility at its East Windsor, New Jersey campus, effectively doubling its U.S. spray drying capacity. This facility, known as 89 Twin Rivers, is equipped with two GMP-ready, commercial-scale PSD-3 spray dryers, enhancing Hovione’s integrated drug development and manufacturing capabilities. The expansion allows the company to provide comprehensive support across drug substance manufacturing, spray drying, and oral drug product production within a single platform.
The facility operates under the existing FDA registration and harmonized quality system of the East Windsor campus, which can streamline technology transfers and simplify scale-up processes. This integrated approach is particularly beneficial as drug programs transition from development to commercial manufacturing, addressing a critical need in the industry.
Hovione aims to tackle the persistent challenge of poor aqueous solubility in pharmaceuticals. By utilizing its spray drying technology to create amorphous solid dispersions, the company seeks to improve the bioavailability of poorly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients. The opening of 89 Twin Rivers marks a significant milestone in Hovione’s ongoing $100 million U.S. investment program and lays the groundwork for future expansions at the East Windsor campus.
Plans for the next five to ten years include the development of an additional 125,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on adjacent property, which will feature more laboratories and enhanced manufacturing capabilities. Hovione’s strategy aims to establish a network of autonomous yet harmonized development and manufacturing sites across North America, Europe, and Asia, supporting regionalized supply networks and bolstering supply chain resilience.
