Ireland’s National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) has been designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) training center to enhance biopharma engineering skills in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs). This initiative aims to address critical skills gaps in the biomanufacturing sector, aligning training with regional priorities and regulatory frameworks.
The WHO’s selection of NIBRT follows a competitive application process, with the institute set to collaborate with various stakeholders to identify and fill skills gaps in biopharma manufacturing. NIBRT will provide a curriculum that encompasses all aspects of biopharma production, including drug substance, quality control, and the integration of automation and AI technologies.
This initiative is part of the WHO’s broader Biomanufacturing Workforce Training Initiative, established in 2023 to bolster local production capabilities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As one of seven global training centers, NIBRT will play a crucial role in empowering LMICs to develop sustainable biopharma manufacturing practices, thereby enhancing their resilience against future health emergencies.
